Description

A surimono is a print in which an image is combined with poetry to celebrate a special event. This print shows the poet Hisagataya dancing with a troupe of geisha at a teahouse in the town of Furuichi near Ise.
A woodblock print depicts two figures dancing on a veranda beneath red lanterns adorned with wheel motifs. On the left, a woman in an ornate, wheel-patterned kimono and elaborate hairpins leans right. Opposite her, a figure in a dark robe and striped blue trousers sings with an open mouth, wearing a white headwrap. Faint calligraphy floats across the dark sky, and a decorative border of wheels lines the bottom against a reddish ground.
