Description

Late in his career, Hiroshige explored the poetic theme of setsugekka, “snow, moon, and flowers,” in a set of three triptychs. This panoramic scene shows the autumn moon over Kanazawa, near Tokyo. Hiroshige’s contemporaries would have recognized the coastline dotted with villages, fishing boats, and the distinctive double-arched bridge at the bottom right.
A horizontally oriented woodblock triptych depicts a coastal landscape at night. A pale, round moon sits high in a dark gray sky above turquoise waters. On the left, dark pine trees and small houses line a hill. A central peninsula extends toward the horizon where white sailboats drift. Distant blue mountains rise in the background. Red rectangular boxes and black script appear in the corners, framing the tranquil bay.
