Description

Adamo belonged to a prominent family of printmakers in Mantua. This engraving is based on a preparatory drawing by Giulio Romano that relates to a fresco he painted in 1527 in the Sala dei Venti (Room of the Winds) in the Palazzo del Tè in Mantua.
A horizontally oriented engraving in black ink on cream paper depicts numerous muscular, partially nude men in two wooden boats hauling a large sea creature with a scaly, curled body and prominent eye. Centrally, a man raises a trident while others pull a heavy net. To the right, another man holds a small fish aloft. Stylized, swirling waves fill the foreground against a light, plain sky.
