Description

The artist covered the sides and reverse of this panel with a thin layer of gesso (a type of plaster), allowing the texture of the rough wood to remain visible. He then painted it to resemble porphyry, a beautiful and valuable stone.
A vertically oriented tempera and gold painting on wood features a pointed, flamelike top. In the upper triangle, Christ on a cross is flanked by figures in blue and pink. Below, Mary in blue robes holds a child against a red patterned backdrop. To the left, a kneeling man holds a staff; to the right, a figure in red holds a jar. All have light skin tones and gold halos against the gold background.
