Description

This engraving is part of the Tarocchi group marked with the letter “E,” and named Conditions of Man. This series outlines the social and hierarchical order of ten characters (Beggar, Servant, Artisan, Merchant, Gentleman, Knight, Doge King, Emperor, and Pope), starting from the lower grade and ending with the most important one.

Here, Re (The King) is shown as a full-length crowned male figure, facing front. The ruler is seated on his throne, and holds a scepter with his right hand.
A vertically oriented engraving, hand-colored with gold on cream paper, depicts a light-skinned king seated forward on a throne. He wears a pointed crown and a pleated tunic over a flared skirt. His right hand holds a slender scepter, and his left hand rests on his hip. Diagonal lines pattern the decorative border framing the figure. At the bottom, the text "E", "RE VIII", and "8" are inscribed.
