The column krater takes its name from the column-like struts supporting the handles and rim.

Description

Two satyr-maenad pairs rush across this vase, similar but not identical to one another. The leading satyr is balding and infibulated, the trailing one more hirsute; the leading maenad carries a thyrsos, the trailing one two torches. On the reverse, a stock scene appears, with three youths standing, as if in conversation.
A black ceramic column-krater vessel features reddish-orange figures and two thick vertical handles. On the rounded body, two satyrs with horse tails chase two maenads in long, pleated robes. On the left, a satyr lunges toward a maenad. In the center, another reaches for a maenad holding a leafy staff. Vertical stripes and dotted geometric patterns decorate the neck and wide rim above the central figural scene.
