Did You Know?

The voluptuous women supporting surrounding the lower stem of this chalice were likely inspired by caryatids--sculpted female figures used as weight bearing columns in classical architecture.
A vertically oriented drawing of a chalice, detailed with brown ink and wash on aged paper, features a plain cup supported by an ornate stem. Above the octagonal base, tiers of figures including seated children and standing adults back-to-back support the cup, topped by a child flanked by birds. A faint architectural outline frames the object. To our right, the paper's reverse displays a museum stamp and handwritten numbers.
