A vertically oriented etching and drypoint in black ink depicts Whistler, a man with a light skin tone. In the upper half, dense hatched lines frame his head, concentrated on our left. Facing forward with a mustache, his features emerge from textured shadows beneath a patch of light hair. Sparse lines define his shoulders, while the lower half of the composition remains mostly blank.
