Description

This print is an early state (with no texts) of the print that was published in Le Charivari (November 30, 1842) as plate 36 from the series Ancient History.
A vertically oriented black ink lithograph depicts three caricatured figures in a studio with expressive line work. On the left, a bare-chested woman clutches a draped cloth. Centrally, a man in a plumed helmet and ornate armor gazes upward. To the right, a gaunt artist in glasses kneels on the floor, holding a palette and reaching toward the armor. In the background, a sketch and framed pictures are rendered in soft lithographic shading.
