Description

This print (with title and captions added) was published in Le Charivari (May 29, 1845) as plate 2 from the series Pastorals.
A vertically oriented lithograph in black ink depicts a man with light-toned skin dangling from a splintered tree branch. He hangs with outstretched arms while his top hat falls away. Wearing a dark coat and striped trousers, he is suspended above a woman looking up from below. A gnarled tree trunk rises beside them against a distant horizon. Sketchy, frenzied lines and dark shading define the layered forms throughout the scene.
