Description

This print was published in Le Charivari (April 6, 1859) as plate 1 from the series The Exhibition of 1859.
A vertically oriented lithograph depicts a man with light skin tone standing centrally, facing us. Wearing a dark coat and wide-brimmed hat, he extends his left arm to hold a rectangular frame containing a painting of a lit candle and pipe. Sketchy, dark lines and high contrast define his wide stance and patterned trousers. To either side, men carrying canvases walk away into a blurred background.
