Description

This print was published in Le Charivari (September 22, 1866) as plate 181 from the series News of the Day.
A vertically oriented print in black ink depicts two full-body figures. On our left, a woman wearing a hooded, floor-length gown holds a long, paddle-ended oar and looks toward our right. To her right, a bearded man with a tiered, pointed hat and draped tunic leans toward her with one hand outstretched. Hatched shading defines their forms. Inscriptions below them read "VENITIE" and "ITALIE" above cursive handwritten text.
