Description

The inscription on the panel over the arched doorway seems to refer to Robert's Russian patron, Count Alexandre Sergevitch Stroganov, who was in Paris between 1770 and 1779 and commissioned a series of monumental paintings from Robert.
A vertically oriented cream paper with ink and wash drawing in monochromatic brown depicts a vast stone structure. A statue of a draped figure overlooks a landing where figures lean on a railing. In the background, stairs lead toward a sunlit arched opening. Figures gather in the shadowed foreground near a lower arch, while dark washes contrast with the light-filled interior where masonry is defined by loose lines and varying shades of brown.
