Did You Know?

This woodcut won the third prize in its category at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s 1927 May Show.

Description

In this woodcut, Kubinyi’s title and the image itself seem intended to evoke religious themes. Rays of light cascade from a dark sky onto a peaceful nude man, transforming the clouds beyond into a representation of the heavens. The man’s confident posture and calm expression suggest a sense of ease, much like the innocence of Adam and Eve from the Christian Bible, whose story the print’s title directly references. The coastal landscape and bountiful plants around the figure similarly evoke a primordial world.
A vertically oriented woodblock print depicts a muscular, nude man with light skin tone standing centrally on a shore, hands on hips and eyes downcast. He is surrounded by broad green leaves and clusters of red flowers. Above, white rays of light radiate from a dark, scalloped cloud, illuminating his body against a background of water meeting the horizon. A signature appears at the bottom right.
