Description

A study made for a larger racetrack composition rendered in pastel, Degas’s Jockey shows the attention that the artist lavished on perfecting the positions of the horse’s legs, hoofs, jaw straining against the bit, and the swish of the tail.
A vertically oriented charcoal drawing in thick dark lines that contrast with the beige paper background depicts a man riding a horse, seen from his back and facing slightly to the right. The horse raises its front right foot and pulls against the bit, turning its head slightly to the right while its tail swishes to the left. The charcoal drawing the man and horse's face has been smoothed, while visible lines shade the back of the horse.
