Description

To create printed reproductions of his wash drawings, Le Prince refined the method of aquatint, which uses particles of resin and acid to etch areas of granular tone into the printing plate. The finished effect imitates the subtle gradations of light and shadow achieved in wash drawings like Landscape with Watermill.
A vertically oriented etching and aquatint in brown tones depicts a pastoral gathering. On the left, a man with light skin plays a long-necked instrument beside a seated woman. Behind them, another woman leans against a cow. Sheep and a second cow gather to the right. Tall, leafy trees and a draped tent frame the group, with a birdcage hanging from a branch. Below, the script reads "La Récréation Champêtre."
