Description

A leading 16th-century Dutch printmaker and painter, Lucas van Leyden is credited with bringing a high degree of naturalism to the craft of printmaking. Although the landscape never became the primary subject, in prints such as Return of the Prodigal Son Lucas created a plausible yet imaginary setting.
A horizontally oriented print in dense black-inked fine lines depicts people with light skin tones. In the center, the Prodigal Son kneels in tattered clothes before an older man with a white beard who leans forward to touch his shoulder. To our left, three men in ornate robes stand before a stone building. To our right, onlookers gather under tall trees. A dog sniffs the ground. A castle, river, and mountains fill the background.
