This print won an honorable mention in etching at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s 1928 May Show.

Description

Edwin Kaufman’s interest in the industrial, working-class areas of New York began at a young age, as shown in this etching made when he was around 21 years old. The ferry slip—a specialized dock for loading cargo and passengers onto a transport boat—depicted here could possibly be at the Battery Maritime Building at the southern point of Manhattan. Instead of featuring the building’s elaborate architecture, Kaufman directs the viewer’s attention outward toward factory-rich Brooklyn, highlighting the workers and heavy equipment.
A horizontally oriented etching in dark ink depicts a ferry slip interior with dense hatching creating a heavy ceiling and columns. Large, curved arches span the left foreground while a small figure sits atop a central beam. To the right, a rectangular opening reveals a boat on the water and a distant city skyline. Handwritten text and a signature sit within the bottom white margin.
