Did You Know?

The man in the image is General Lafayette; the pear on top of him represents King Louis-Philippe, showing their uncomfortable relationship.

Description

This print was published in the journal La Caricature (No. 69) as plate 139.
A horizontally oriented print in black ink on light paper depicts a man reclining on a patterned sofa with his eyes closed. A large pear rests heavily on his torso. One arm hangs down, clutching a paper with French script. In the background, a framed picture shows two standing figures. Fine cross-hatching and lines shade the scene, and French text runs along the bottom.
