Description

Late in his career, Hiroshige explored the poetic theme of setsugekka, “snow, moon, and flowers,” in a set of three triptychs. This panoramic scene features a river passing snow-covered mountains along the Kiso Road.
A vertical print in muted tones depicts a landscape of undulating beige mountains under a dark gray sky speckled with white stars. Sparse pine trees and spindly branches grow along the rocky slopes. A winding, dark blue river speckled with white flows through the center, crossed by a narrow bridge near three thatched houses. Three circular seals are featured in the bottom left corner, grounding the composition.
