Description

Late in his career, Hiroshige explored the poetic theme of setsugekka, “snow, moon, and flowers,” in a set of three triptychs. This panoramic scene features a river passing snow-covered mountains along the Kiso Road.
A vertical woodblock print depicts a snowy mountain landscape extending from a churning river to high, white summits. Craggy, pale cliffs punctuated by spindly pine trees dominate the left and center. Below, the deep blue river, speckled with white flecks of snow, flows between jagged, snow-covered banks. The composition emphasizes dramatic verticality beneath a dark, starlit sky. Three small circular seals are stamped in the bottom right corner.
