Did You Know?

The rider at the left has a typical Qidan hairstyle: head shaved on top with thin braids below.

Description

Equestrian pursuits and hunting were particularly popular among the Khitan (also spelled “Qidan”) and Jurchen, ethnic groups who lived along China’s northeastern border. Their nomadic lifestyle intrigued the Chinese court and inspired Chinese artists to develop a painting genre of foreign people hunting.
A rounded square ink and color on silk painting depicts hunters across muted gray hills. Near the top, a figure on a reddish-brown horse gallops from our left toward a small animal. Below, a group on horseback travels in the lower right, one rider shielded by a red parasol, while a lone horseman stands to our left. Extensive hazy space fills the center, emphasizing the vastness of the atmospheric landscape.
