Did You Know?

Between the figures is a draped egg-shaped stone known as an omphalos, the metaphorical center of the world.

Description

This is a typical example of Neo-Attic work, a school that revived the Archaic style of the late sixth century BC. The elongated figures and mannered gestures are typical of this school.
A marble relief slab depicts two figures in profile. On our left, Apollo stands holding a large lyre. Facing him on our right, the winged goddess Nike pours from a jug into a shallow bowl. Both wear floor-length, rippling garments with deep folds. Between them at the base sits a mound-like omphalos. The light-colored stone shows brown staining and a broken corner. The carving includes detailed, overlapping feathers on Nike's wings.
