Did You Know?

The design on this bracelet was made by pressing a mold against the glass while it was still hot.

Description

Jewelry made entirely of glass, such as this bracelet, held wide appeal in Roman society because of its potential to imitate more precious materials. The adaptability of glass offered an affordable alternative to the expensive items favored by the aristocracy, enabling less affluent Romans to follow imperial tastes.
A bracelet, an undulating ring of deep blue glass, features a repeating pattern of raised oval sections separated by vertical ridges. One central section displays a molded, human-like face with large eyes and a rounded nose. The grainy, translucent surface is speckled with iridescent silver and light purple patches. The circular band's wavy silhouette creates a rhythmic composition, while the interior mirrors the textured, shimmering finish of the exterior.
