Description

Charles W. Hawthorne painted The Offering in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he had established the summertime Cape Cod School of Art. In this composition, two boys present gifts of a toy boat and a basket of fish to a modern Madonna and Child. Many of the artist's works focused on Provincetown's large community of Portuguese immigrants who worked primarily in the fishing and whaling industries.
A vertically oriented oil painting depicts a seated woman with a light skin tone and a thin yellow halo. She wears a black dress and holds a baby in a white garment. To our left, a boy in a black shirt kneels. To our right, another boy in a red shirt holds a fish over a basin filled with fish. The group is set against a mottled green background.
