Did You Know?

This color woodblock print is from a Ming dynasty artists’ primer called the Ten Bamboo Studio Painting and Calligraphy Handbook 十竹齋書畫譜.
A horizontally oriented woodblock print in black ink on tan paper depicts a bird sitting on a blossoming branch sweeping from the left toward the upper right. Across a central vertical fold, the bird sits in profile atop thin stems. Clusters of grainy, gray blossoms and broad leaves adorn the dark branches against the aged background, with varying shades of gray wash defining the bird and its textured environment.
