Description

An avid billiards fan, Bellows enjoyed playing matches among a circle of close friends that included his valued colleague and former painting instructor Robert Henri. Despite the careful characterization of the titular figure in this print, his identity remains unknown.
A vertically oriented print in black ink depicts a mustachioed man with weathered features in a white shirt and dark vest, holding a cue stick. Behind him, another man in a vest stands by a billiard table with three white balls. Thick, expressive black ink fills the background, contrasted by a bright rectangular light. Sketchy lines and bold white highlights on the clothing define the figures against the darkness.
