Description

The popularity of billiard games reached a peak during the 1920s, at which time there were more than 4,000 private and public poolrooms operating in New York City alone, and more than 40,000 nationwide. Bellows played billiards at the famed Players Club, the National Arts Club, and the Salmagundi Art Club, all in New York.
A horizontally oriented lithograph depicts a man with a light skin tone leaning over a billiard table. He gazes downward with a furrowed brow and set mouth. On our left, his right hand holds a pool cue vertically; on our right, his left hand grips the rail. Three balls sit on the bright, textured table surface. Dark, hatched shadows fill the background, contrasting with the man's light-colored shirt and dark vest.
