The text is written using lamp black ink made from mixing carbon, gum Arabic, and water.

Description

This manuscript, consisting of 188 double-sided folios, was calligraphed by a scribe at a monastery in northeastern India, commissioned by a monk from Nepal.
A gum tempera and ink painting on a long, narrow, horizontally oriented palm leaf. Three dense blocks of black script fill columns on our left, in the center, and on our right. Two small, circular holes sit between the columns. The warm tan leaf features darkened, slightly frayed edges. Within each column, the script forms six neat, horizontal lines. A faint inscription marks the upper margin on our far left.
