Description

This manuscript, consisting of 188 double-sided folios, was calligraphed by a scribe at a monastery in northeastern India, commissioned by a monk from Nepal. Judging from the style of the paintings, they are the work of Nepalese artists.
Black ink script is applied across a horizontally oriented, warm tan palm leaf with irregular, frayed edges. Three rectangular blocks of dense text are spaced across the surface, separated by two circular punctures. The horizontal grain provides a textured backdrop for rhythmic rows of script. Small characters nestle beneath the primary text blocks at the left and center. The composition is defined by repetitive, dense markings against the natural material.
