Description

Many of Bellows's later paintings focus on Victorian costume. Like The Hag and the Young Man, this drawing was produced as an illustration for The Wind Bloweth in 1922.
A vertically oriented drawing in black lithographic crayon crops around the torso of a woman with light skin tone, angled looking to our right. She wears a small, decorated hat and a buttoned bodice with a ruffled neckline above a full skirt. Her eyes are downcast. Heavy, sketchy strokes define her features and create dark shadows behind her, contrasting against the light paper. A dark, lace-patterned glove covers her left forearm and hand.
