Description

Hokusai probably composed this print as a complement to Mt. Fuji in Clear Weather (see CMA 1930.189) and to illustrate the mountain’s majesty in different weather. Here, a sudden shower covers most of the mountain’s base and slope with dark clouds.
A horizontally oriented print depicts Mount Fuji as a massive, triangular form arcing up toward the upper right, capped with white snow. Its upper slopes are mottled red-brown, darkening into a solid black base. A sharp, pinkish lightning bolt zigzags across the black foreground. Curled white clouds cluster against a blue sky that darkens at the top. Japanese calligraphy sits within a rectangular box in the upper left.
