Historically, the year's first bonito was available in the fourth lunar month, or around May.
A vertically oriented woodblock print depicts a woman with light skin tone kneeling and facing our right, looking down as she cleans a large dark fish. She wears a brown kimono patterned with circles and a white head cloth. The fish rests on a wooden board atop a red and green banded tub. In the foreground, a floral plate holds a knife. Stylized white clouds and Japanese calligraphy decorate the tan background.
