Description

This is a scene from the most popular work in Japanese theater, The Treasury of Loyal Retainers. A tale of loyalty and revenge, it is based on a historical event that took place during 1701-1703.
A horizontally oriented woodblock print depicts fourteen figures with light skin tones clustered in an interior. At the center, a figure in a peach and gray robe dances with a fan. To the right, musicians play hand drums and a flute. To the left, others sit on a raised platform. Figures wear black, peach, and muted red robes with tall black hats. White cranes fly across sliding doors in the background.
