Description

Gros specialized in large battle paintings memorializing the feats of Napoleon (1769-1821). This Orientalist military subject records Napoleon's campaign in Egypt against the British Empire. It also demonstrates how spontaneously the artist could draw on the lithograph stone.
A vertically oriented lithograph in fine black lines on a light paper background depicts a man on horseback, facing right. He wears a striped turban and layered robes, waving a swirling scarf with his raised right arm. A muscular man with a darker skin tone stands at the horse's head, looking back. Fine hatching shades the figures, while smaller horsemen gallop across the flat, open landscape in the distance.
