Did You Know?

The Seine River, especially the mid-Seine valley where Claude Monet lived, is known for being a source of inspiration and subject matter for Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists.

Description

Although this scene was once thought to have been painted by Eugéne Boudin (1824–1898), its creator has yet to be identified.
A horizontally oriented oil painting depicts a tan dirt road on our left, its parallel tracks leading toward red-roofed buildings and tiny figures walking along the path. A green grassy bank slopes down to a broad, shimmering blue river on our right. Dark barges and masted boats cluster near a wooden pier, while distant vessels emit smoke. Above, soft swaths of pale blue and white paint fill a vast sky in the upper half.
