Description

A poet and dramatist, William Henley (1849–1903) was the editor of the British Magazine of Art from 1882 to 1886. He enthusiastically introduced Rodin's sculpture to his readers, even before the artist's work was well known in Paris. To thank him, Rodin made this bust.
A dark brown, textured bronze sculpture depicts the head and shoulders of William E. Henley facing forward. Deep-set eyes gaze from beneath a furrowed brow, while a thick beard and long mustache curl over his mouth. His hair is modeled in rough sections with a tuft above the forehead. Where the chest would have been, the bronze twists into jagged, uneven edges, with visible tool marks and indentations across the surface.
