Description

Nicholson first produced his designs as woodcuts which he hand-colored with watercolor. Following this model, lithography was used to print color for large editions.
A square-format woodcut in black, tan, and olive ink depicts a light-skinned man in a horse and carriage traveling to our right. Wearing a black top hat and light coat, he sits within a dark cabriolet while a long whip arches toward the horse. The tan horse has dark patches and a cream collar. Bold black outlines and heavy shadows define the figures against a simplified landscape.
