Did You Know?

Three beauty lines are lightly incised around the neck.

Description

The parallel matted locks of hair and the incised third eye on the forehead identify this figure as the Hindu god Shiva. A close-cropped beard comes to a point at his chin. The slim elegant form and short lower garment fastened with a low-slung belt are features characteristic of this period.
A fragmented gray sandstone sculpture depicts Shiva standing with downcast eyes and hair in fine ridges topped with a bun. The arms are broken at the elbows, and the legs are missing below the hip and knee. Shiva is bare-chested and wears a pleated sampot wrapped around the waist, secured by a belt. A decorative fold of fabric hangs vertically at the center.
