Description

This small winged altarpiece, called a triptych, was undoubtedly made for private use. The donor and his wife are shown in the lower central scene kneeling before the Virgin, her mother Saint Anne, and the Christ child. Above is the Epiphany with the Three Kings presenting gifts to a tightly swaddled Christ.
A vertically oriented tempera painting displays two horizontal scenes within a carved gold frame. Above, the Virgin Mary in blue sits on our left, holding the nude Christ child as three Magi approach from our right. Below, Mary and a veiled woman sit on our left with the young Christ. A man in black and a woman in red robes kneel on our right. All figures have light skin tones against patterned backgrounds.
