Description

The diva of the Parisian café-concert, Guilbert was portrayed in high and low art throughout the Belle Époque. Toulouse-Lautrec portrayed the singer in her signature long black gloves and simple satin dress with deep V-neck that accentuated her thin figure and distinguished her from her heavily corseted colleagues. Here, enraptured members of the audience gaze adoringly from balconies and peep from behind the curtain.
A vertically oriented lithograph on tan paper depicts Yvette Guilbert, a woman with light skin tone, standing centrally and facing our right with her head tilted back. She has hair swept up and wears long, black gloves. Her mouth is slightly open. To our left, a figure stands with their back turned. On our right, sketchy figures sit in tiered theater boxes. Loose, gestural charcoal lines define the forms, and a monogram sits top left.
