Description

Rembrandt's original plate for the Hundred Guilder print (1942.757) was acquired by William Baillie in 1775 and reworked. The plate was later cut, shaped, and printed in separate sections, as here, showing the central section of the composition.
A vertically oriented print with an arched top in dense black-inked lines depicts Christ, a man with a light skin tone and shoulder-length hair. Light radiates from his head as he stands with arms outstretched within a cavernous space. To our left, a crowd gathers in deep shadow. On our right, figures in heavily folded robes kneel or lie in supplication, one reaching toward Christ with an open hand.
