Description

Shifts in style and taste often result in changes to original architectural details. Rousseau painted these doors with imitation dark wood grain. Another craftsman later scraped off the dark color surrounding the classical designs. This set has recently been conserved.
A vertically oriented oil painting on wood depicts two cream-colored doors within a gilded frame. Each door features four stacked rectangular panels with golden-brown motifs, separated by narrow leaf-patterned bands. Large central panels show seated figures and children surrounded by scrolling designs and blue accents. Winged figures holding bowls crown the top panels, while stylized urns fill the bottom. A dark handle and keyhole appear on the left door above a green marbled base.
