Description

Shifts in style and taste often result in changes to original architectural details. Rousseau painted these doors with imitation dark wood grain. Another craftsman later scraped off the dark color surrounding the classical designs. This set has recently been conserved.
Double wooden doors, divided into four stacked panels on each leaf, feature gold-toned paintings against cream backgrounds. Uppermost horizontal panels depict figures holding bowls. Large central rectangles show seated classical figures amidst scrolling vines, blue accents, and oval vignettes. Below, square panels contain vases with branching foliage. A dark green marble-patterned band lines the base. The panels are outlined in gold molding, and a small black handle marks the center.
