Description

Shifts in style and taste often result in changes to original architectural details. Rousseau painted these doors with imitation dark wood grain. Another craftsman later scraped off the dark color surrounding the classical designs. This set has recently been conserved.
A vertically oriented oil painting on wood depicts two off-white doors framed in gold. Each leaf features four stacked rectangular panels with brown and gold neoclassical designs. The largest central panels contain figures surrounded by scrolling vines, vessels, and small blue rectangles. Top panels show winged figures holding bowls. A dark handle and keyhole are positioned centrally. A dark green, marbled band runs across the base of both doors.
