Description

Shifts in style and taste often result in changes to original architectural details. Rousseau painted these doors with imitation dark wood grain. Another craftsman later scraped off the dark color surrounding the classical designs. This set was conserved in 1979 and retains more traces of the original graining than the other doors by this artist in the museum's collection.
A vertically oriented oil on wood painting depicts a pair of tall, cream-colored doors set within a matching frame. Each door features four stacked rectangular panels embellished with intricate gold-toned designs. Stylized figures, floral scrolls, and green banners decorate the surfaces. Central panels show seated figures beneath red circular medallions, while bottom panels display large urns. A small dark handle marks the right door above dark green base bands.
