Did You Know?

The creatures along the rim of this plate are loosely based on the figures discovered on the walls of Roman ruins a century before.

Description

During the Renaissance, an understanding of classical antiquity was perceived to be a sign of social, intellectual, and economic distinction. Scenes from Greco-Roman mythology were prominently featured on maiolica, covering the surface in a style called istoriato (decorated with stories).
A circular tin-glazed earthenware charger depicts a central scene of a three-horse chariot racing past white columns. A driver steers white, gray, and tan horses toward our right. The wide border features repeating motifs of winged figures, dragon-like creatures, and small medallions in muted yellows, blues, and greens against a white background. An orange and yellow striped pattern lines the outer rim.
