Did You Know?

In the centuries leading up to the Renaissance, boar hunting was an activity reserved for royalty and the aristocracy.

Description

During the Renaissance, an understanding of classical antiquity was perceived to be a sign of social, intellectual, and economic distinction. Scenes from Greco-Roman mythology were prominently featured on maiolica, covering the surface in a style called istoriato (decorated with stories).
A circular earthenware charger features a recessed central scene of a boar hunt in a colorful wooded landscape. Four light-skinned men, including one on a white horse, attack a dark boar with spears and three dogs. A wide white border displays repeating grotesques in yellow and brown, including winged animals. This outer band is punctuated by four small circular medallions displaying human figures.
