Small dabs of white paint suggest the reflective shimmer of the sun on the landscape.

Description

While many Dutch painters focused on depicting the local countryside, others were inspired by the hilly topography, golden sunlight, and picturesque monuments of Italy. Although Aelbert Cuyp never visited Italy, this serene and beautifully preserved panel demonstrates his skill in evoking the idyllic qualities of a distant land.
A horizontally oriented oil painting on wood depicts a landscape under a vast, cloud-filled sky. In the middle ground, a light-skinned man in a red coat leads two pack animals toward the right, followed by a light-skinned woman riding one and two other men. Dark boulders anchor the shadowed foreground. Beyond them, rolling hills, water, and distant buildings recede under pale sunlight beneath a sky of drifting gray and white clouds.
