Description

Lalanne made an important contribution to the etching revival in mid-19th-century France. In 1862, he was one of the founders of the Etching Society (Société des Aquafortistes) with whom he published numerous landscape and architectural prints.
A horizontally oriented print in black ink depicts a canal receding toward a pale horizon. To our left, a small boat rests in shadow near a tall tree with a branch reaching across the sky. To our right, two tiny figures walk a path lined by dense trees with layered hatching for leaves. Fine, repeated strokes create dark textures along the edges, contrasting with the light sky and reflective water.
